Red Diesel fuel duty changes

Switching to Pure LPG will provide significant fuel savings.

 Background to changes:

Businesses operating diesel fork lift trucks will see a substantial rise in the price of fuel from 1st April 2022 due to legislative changes in fuel duty rates. As part of the governments goals to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, the government announced that it would remove the entitlement to use red diesel and rebated biodiesel from most sectors from April 2022. This includes the use of red diesel in fork lift trucks. The change in tax rate is intended to ensure that users of red diesel fuel are taxed at the standard rate for diesel from April 2022, like motorists. Red diesel is chemically marked and dyed to allow authorities to identify it is rebated fuel. Normal diesel used in motor vehicles on the road is known as ‘white diesel’.

What is changing:

The current fuel duty rate as of 23rd of March 2022 is as follows:

White diesel: 52.95 p/litre.

Rebated / red diesel: 10.18p/litre

After 12 months the fuel duty rates will revert to the old rate (prior to 23/3/22) before the chancellors cut which was 57.95 p/litre for white diesel.

This means that from the 1st of April 2022 users of diesel fork lift trucks will be paying an additional 42.77 p/litre and after 12 months this will increase to 47.77 p/litre.

For business this is a substantial increase on top of already record high diesel prices.

What can businesses do to reduce fuel costs:

Switching to LPG powered fork lift trucks provides substantial fuel savings. Their is no road fuel duty rate on gas powered FLTs as LPG is a cleaner fuel emitting very minimal CO2, NOx and particulate matter emissions. The price per litre of LPG is also much cheaper typically in the region of 30-40p/litre. LPG powered fork lift trucks comply with stringent emission regulations so there is no need for any retrofits / modifications to the FLTs.

Why should you choose LPG over electric FLTs:

Whilst both electric and LPG powered FLTs are a better option to diesel trucks. In terms of cost savings and overall performance LPG fork lift trucks are far superior as seen below;

  • Cheaper up front capital costs on LPG FLTs.
  • No requirement for expensive battery charging infrastructure
  • 24hour utilisation no downtime in having to charge the FLTs
  • LPG powered FLTs are refuelled in minutes
  • Cheaper maintenance – especially when compared to having batteries replaced and then disposed off.
  • Superior performance of LPG FLTs, can be utilised at full power in all weather conditions and terrains (electric FLTs have reduced power in colder conditions)
  • Greater flexibility of LPG powered FLTs they are able to work at optimum power indoors and outdoors.
